New Mexico High School Basketball Coach Resigns After T-Shirt Complaint by Atheists

MADISON, Wis., April. 29, 2019 /Christian Newswire/ -- The head basketball coach of Animas Public Schools in Colorado resigned after being attacked by Madison, Wisconsin's Freedom From Religion.

Before a playoff game on February 27, the athletes wore T-shirts saying, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

Allegedly, the coach was holding Bible studies with the players, but the players attended a Bible study on their own and the coach taught the group once in a while.

Freedom From Religion was founded by mother Anne Nicol Gaylor (deceased) and daughter Annie Laurie Gaylor, who now co-directs the group with husband Dan Barker, a former piano player for evangelists.

FFR Legal Fellow Chris Line wrote Superintendent Loren Cushman saying "federal courts have ruled public school coaches and athletic personnel must not promote religion."

However, the players were the ones who wanted to wear the T-shirts and attend the Bible study. Eventually, the coach resigned as the superintendent caved into the atheist demands.

Steve McConkey operates 4 Winds Christian Athletics, a Madison, Wisconsin worldwide ministry that stands up for Christian athletes. They are near the Freedom From Religion offices close to the Wisconsin Capitol.

"Freedom From Religion was founded because the founders did not like pro-life Christians and they have funded 20,000 abortions through their Women's Medical Fund," states McConkey. "Also, they were in the Zero Population Growth movement that promoted controlling populations.

"This group has a desire to eliminate Christian expression throughout the United States. They are picking on kids who wear T-shirts. We have greater problems in our country than kids wearing T-shirts. Most likely, a few people complained, a dictatorship by a few."

Steve and his wife are the founders (1988) and operate 4 WINDS. They started in world-class track and field ministries in 1981. From 1982 through 1992, Steve was a USA National Club Coach for teams in Eugene, Dallas-Ft. Worth, and Minneapolis-St. Paul. 4 WINDS started as a team in 1988. Athletes were ranked eighty times on all teams.

In 1992, 4 WINDS dropped the team and started working with all world-class track and field athletes. In 2014, 4 WINDS started standing up worldwide for Christian athletes in every sport. Steve graduated with honors from Western Kentucky University (Master of Science-Public Health) and Minnesota State University, Mankato (BS-Community Health).
