Has
Society Been Completely Lost to the Sexual Revolution?
Bishop Elliott traces the roots of the sexual
revolution and gives hope for the future

SAN FRANCISCO, March 14, 2023 /Christian
Newswire/ -- From abortion-on-demand to gender reassignment of children to
same-sex adoption, the sexual revolution has been the single most destructive
tidal wave that has engulfed the family in modern society, writes Bishop Peter
J. Elliott in his new book, THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION: HISTORY-IDEOLOGY-POWER
(Ignatius Press).
The effects of the sexual revolution have been absolutely devastating,
especially in the breakdown of the family, the backbone of society, yet it is
part of much wider and deeper developments happening in our world. It asserts
the total freedom of the individual to behave as if the traditions of religion,
the wisdom of philosophy and the realities of biology have no claim on how we
live, especially in the area of sexuality.
Most Reverend Peter J. Elliott is auxiliary bishop emeritus of Melbourne,
Australia, and holds a doctorate from the John Paul II Institute for Marriage
and Family, Rome. From 1987 to 1997, he served in the Vatican's Pontifical
Council for the Family. He was the last director of the John Paul II Institute
for Marriage and Family, Melbourne.
THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION traces the history of the revolution from its earliest
inclinations through the modern era and highlights the vast consequences of it
in today's society. Bishop Elliott also records the constant teaching of popes
and Church councils and highlights their focus on the integration of sexual
morality and personality within the contexts of human nature, marriage and the
welfare of children.
"The best book I have read on this subject. It is a highly readable account of
the history of the sexual revolution, the ideas that underpinning it, and its
social effects over the past two centuries," said Tracey Rowland, St. John Paul
II Chair of Theology, University of Notre Dame (Australia). "There are many
books on facets of the sexual revolution written from a Christian perspective.
The merit of this one is that it seeks to cover the field — all the milestones
along the way and all the big names — but it does so at a level of expression
that any intelligent teenager could follow."
