World Gospel Mission's Compassionate Ministries Witnesses Transformation

Contact: Rachel Elwood, World Gospel Mission, 765-671-7255

MEDIA ADVISORY, Dec. 7 /Christian Newswire/ --World Gospel Mission recently launched its Compassionate Ministries arm, and, and as a result, churches in El Salvador and Kenya are transforming their local communities. Compassionate Ministries Coordinator Philip Renfroe said that the transformation process is simple. "When a church becomes motivated by Christ's love to meet the needs in their area and are empowered to do so, amazing things happen."

WGM officially began its Compassionate Ministries arm in June 2009 with the goal of equipping churches around the world to address the social, physical, and spiritual needs of their communities. WGM serves churches in many countries ranging from Uganda to Ukraine to Mexico.

According to Renfroe, changes are evident after just six months. "A Kenyan church located near a truck stop that is notorious for commercial sex workers and the spread of HIV/AIDS has begun reaching out to the women. As a result of providing food, healthcare, love, and acceptance, dozens of women have begun attending the church, and many are looking for ways to leave the commercial sex trade."

In El Salvador, a WGM-affiliated church has been invited to work with city health and education leaders to teach morals and values in the classroom. "They have been given complete freedom to teach from the Bible," said Hubert Harriman, president of WGM. "They are also looking into expanding the partnership with other evangelical churches in the community, and, while that can be a challenge, we are confident that working together will result in increased effectiveness for the kingdom!"

WGM has been working in compassionate and humanitarian outreach for decades, but 2009 marks the start of their intentional, mission-wide movement to empower local churches to reach their own communities.
